Concrete & Driveways in Auckland
Concrete is the workhorse of most Auckland renovations — driveways, patios, footpaths, shed slabs and foundations. What it costs and how well it lasts depends far less on the concrete itself than on what sits underneath it, and Auckland’s ground makes that especially true.
Much of the region sits on reactive clay soils that shrink and swell with the seasons. Skimp on the base, drainage or steel and even good concrete will crack, lift or settle. The guides below cover the choices that actually move the price and the outcome, with realistic ranges for local jobs.
Every slab is different — access, ground conditions, thickness, finish and reinforcing all change the number. We publish ranges in each guide rather than a single figure; treat them as a budgeting start point and always get a written, itemised quote.

Common questions
Do I need consent for a concrete driveway or patio in Auckland?
A plain, at-grade driveway or patio usually doesn’t need building consent, but resource consent rules on impervious surfaces, overland flow paths and proximity to boundaries can still apply, and anything structural (retaining, close to a boundary, or altering drainage) may. Check with Auckland Council for your specific site before you pour.
Why does Auckland’s clay soil matter so much for concrete?
Reactive clays move as they wet and dry. Without adequate base preparation, compaction, drainage and reinforcing, that movement transfers into the slab as cracking and lifting. It’s the single most common reason Auckland concrete fails early.
Is resurfacing worth it, or should I replace?
Resurfacing can refresh a sound slab cosmetically, but it doesn’t fix a failing base or structural cracks. If the underlying slab has moved, replacement is usually the honest long-term answer. Our resurfacing guides walk through how to tell the difference.
