How we price

Where the numbers come from

01

Ranges, not guesses

Every figure is a range with the reasons behind it — access, ground, finish — because that’s what moves a real Auckland quote.

02

Consent position stated

Whether a job needs building or resource consent is a council question, and the answer changes by district. Articles say which consent is likely and point you at the council that decides it.

03

Checked against this year

Auckland pricing has shifted hard since 2023. Figures here are re-tested against what trades are quoting now, not what they quoted when the page went up.

Common questions

Before you dig in

How long does a concrete driveway take to install in Auckland?

Most residential driveways take 2 to 4 days: excavation and base, then the pour, then curing. Keep vehicles off for at least 7 days and avoid heavy loads for 28 days while the concrete reaches full strength.

Is exposed aggregate worth the extra cost over plain concrete?

For many Auckland homeowners, yes. It hides marks, offers better grip in the wet, and adds kerb appeal that supports resale value, for roughly $40 to $70 per m2 more than a plain finish.

When is the best time of year to pour a driveway in Auckland?

The drier months from late spring to early autumn are ideal. Experienced crews pour year-round by planning around Auckland’s weather.

Does exposed aggregate crack more than plain concrete?

No. Cracking is driven by base preparation, reinforcement and control joints, not the surface finish. Good groundwork matters more than the look.

Can I change a plain concrete driveway to exposed aggregate later?

Not easily. The finish is created during the pour, so the practical routes are an overlay or a full replacement. It is far cheaper to decide up front.

Do I need building consent for a retaining wall in Auckland?

As a general rule a wall up to 1.5 metres high carrying no extra load can often be built without consent. Over 1.5m, or if it supports a driveway or structure, building consent is usually required. Always confirm your specific case with Auckland Council.
