The two options, side by side
Before I get into the why, here’s the comparison I actually sketch out for clients on the back of a quote. It’s the same two options whether you’re in Pukekohe, Bombay or further out toward Patumahoe — the ground doesn’t change much, and neither does the maths.

Read that table as a starting point, not a verdict. Two sections a paddock apart can price out completely differently once you factor in the height being retained, how far the rock has to be carted, and what the ground behind the wall is doing. Those ranges are what I’d expect on a straightforward job with decent digger access — the moment the site gets steep, wet or hard to reach, both numbers climb.
Boulder walls: fast, rugged, and it drains itself
A boulder wall is exactly what it sounds like — big rocks, usually quarried greywacke or Hinuera stone, stacked and locked together by an experienced digger operator. On a lifestyle block they look like they belong there, they go up fast, and they cope with our reactive clay well, because the gaps between boulders let water drain through instead of building up pressure behind the wall. That last bit matters more than most people realise.
- Cost: roughly $450 to $850 per square metre of wall face including GST, supply and placement, depending on rock size and cartage to site.
- Best for: longer runs, rural and semi-rural sections, gentle to moderate slopes, and a natural look.

The catch is space. Boulder walls are built on a batter — a backward lean — so they’ve got a wide footprint, and that eats into your usable land. They also live and die on the operator’s skill; I’ve seen a poorly stacked boulder wall start bellying out within a few years, and once it moves, it’s a rebuild, not a patch-up.
That footprint is the thing people underestimate. Because the wall leans back into the bank, the base of a taller boulder wall sits well forward of its top, so on a half-hectare block with room to spare it’s no bother at all, but tuck one in close to a driveway or a boundary and you quickly lose more flat ground than you expected. Cartage is the other variable I always flag — the rock itself is only part of the bill, and getting big boulders out to a section down a long metalled drive can add real money before a single one is placed.
Block walls: engineered, tidy, and it takes almost no room
A reinforced concrete block wall, or a proprietary interlocking segmental system like Firth or Allan Block, is the near-vertical option. Steel reinforcing, a proper concrete footing and engineered drainage behind it give you a strong wall that barely eats into the section — which matters if you’re retaining tight against a driveway, a shed pad or a boundary line.

Where the money goes on a block wall is mostly out of sight by the time the job’s finished. The footing has to be dug and poured to the engineer’s detail, the steel tied in, and the backfill built up in layers with drainage metal behind it. None of that shows in the finished face, but it’s the difference between a wall that stands for decades and one that leans. It’s why a block wall almost always takes longer to build than a boulder wall of the same length — you’re pouring and curing concrete, not just placing stone.
Why hydrostatic pressure is the real wall-killer
Block walls are far less forgiving of shortcuts than boulder walls. Because they’re solid, any water that isn’t drained away builds up hydrostatic pressure behind them, and that pressure is the single most common reason retaining walls fail here in Auckland — not bad concrete, not weak steel, just water with nowhere to go. Done properly with drainage, a reinforced block wall is extremely durable. Skip the drainage coil to save a few hundred dollars, and it bulges or cracks within a handful of wet winters. It’s the cheapest part of the job to get right and the most expensive part to fix if you don’t.
The 1.5-metre consent line that catches people out
Here’s the rule that surprises a lot of lifestyle-block owners. In Auckland, a retaining wall generally needs building consent once it retains more than 1.5 metres of ground, or if it’s under 1.5m but carries a surcharge load like a driveway or a building above it. That applies to both boulder and block walls equally. Above that height you’ll also typically need engineering design, and on our clay a geotechnical assessment is often part of it. Matching the wall to the site
When a client can’t decide, I run them through the same handful of trade-offs rather than talking up one type or the other. Here’s how the two stack up on the things that actually decide it once you’re standing on the bank:

Nine times out of ten, once you lay it out like that, the site makes the call for you. Room and a rural feel point to boulders; a tight, formal, near-vertical hold close to something you’ve built points to block.
Which one goes on your bank
For a long, gentle bank on a rural section where the natural look suits and you’ve got room to spare, a boulder wall is usually the more economical and honest choice, and it drains itself. For retaining close to a house, driveway or boundary, where every metre of land counts and you want a vertical, formal finish, a reinforced block wall earns its higher price tag. On plenty of Pukekohe and Bombay blocks the answer is actually both — boulders on the open runs, block where things get tight against a driveway or shed. Whichever you pick, the money that matters isn’t the visible wall, it’s the drainage and the base underneath it. The sand, the base course and the drainage coil are cheap compared to the wall itself — skimp there and it doesn’t matter which type you built, you’ll be paying for it again in five years.
