A bad concrete job doesn’t hide. It cracks, it lifts, it holds puddles, and every time you pull into the drive you see the money you wasted. I’ve pulled out more failed slabs than I can count, and most of it was avoidable — the homeowner picked the wrong crew, or picked the right-looking crew for the wrong reasons.

The cheap quote and the missing basecourse
Concrete is heavy, skilled work, and the price reflects that. If one quote lands $4,000 under the rest for the same driveway, something’s been left out — usually the basecourse, the steel, or the thickness. Cut those and the number drops. So does the lifespan. I’d rather tell a homeowner that up front than get the call three years later.

When you line three quotes up, the trap is scanning for the smallest total and stopping there. I tell people to do the opposite — read the dearest quote first, work out what it actually includes, then check whether the cheaper ones are pricing the same job or a thinner version of it. A quote that spells out the base, the steel and the slab depth is doing you a favour, even if it isn’t the lowest number. The one that just says “supply and lay driveway” for a suspiciously round figure is where the corners get cut once the truck’s on site and it’s too late to argue.
Get the thickness in writing, not just a verbal
Thickness is where a dodgy operator saves money, because you can’t see it once it’s down. Ask for the number and get it written on the quote before you sign anything. A contractor who won’t commit to a thickness on paper is telling you something about the rest of the job too.
There’s a simple test for this. Ask what thickness they’re pouring and watch how they answer. Someone who works to a standard gives you a straight number and happily writes it down. Someone who mumbles about “whatever the site needs” and won’t put a figure on paper is leaving themselves room to pour thin. Once the concrete’s floated and finished, nobody can tell 90mm from 100mm by looking — the only proof you’ll ever have is what’s written on the quote before the pour. It costs you nothing to ask, and it’s the single easiest way to sort a straight operator from one who’s hoping you won’t.
Manukau’s clay, and what happens when groundwork gets skipped
A lot of the older sections around Manukau and Papatoetoe sit on clay, and clay swells when it’s wet and shrinks when it dries. That movement will crack a slab that isn’t sitting on a properly prepared base. In houses from that older stock — the ones built before driveways were routinely re-poured on compacted hardfill — I still see original slabs that were never given a fighting chance against the ground underneath. Good prep means stripping the topsoil, compacting hardfill in layers, and getting the falls right before a drop of concrete goes down. If a crew turns up ready to pour without doing that groundwork first, walk away.
You don’t need to be a geotechnical engineer to spot the risk. If your lawn goes rock-hard and cracks open over summer, then turns to sticky mud in winter, that’s reactive clay telling you what it does. Concrete laid straight onto that ground with no compacted base has nothing stable to sit on, so it moves as the clay moves and cracks along the weak points. The prep isn’t glamorous and you’ll never see it once the slab’s down, but building the base up in compacted layers and getting the levels right is the difference between a driveway that ages gracefully and one that maps out cracks in its first couple of winters. Falls, puddles, and the redo jobs I keep seeing on the North Shore
Water is the enemy of a driveway. A flat slab holds puddles, grows moss, and turns into a slip hazard come winter. Concrete needs a fall of at least 1 in 100 away from the house. On the North Shore and out west I regularly see slabs that drain straight back at the garage door — that’s not a patch-up job, that’s a full redo. Sort the drainage before the pour, not after, whether it’s a fresh driveway or a resurfacing job over an old one.
Getting falls right is cheap while the site’s still open and expensive once the concrete’s set. Before a pour I want to know where every litre of water goes — off the slab, away from the house and garage, and into something that can carry it away rather than a low spot that turns into a pond. On a resurfacing job over an old slab it matters even more, because you’re often working with falls someone else got wrong years ago, and simply skimming over the top locks the problem in. If a contractor isn’t talking to you about drainage before they talk about the finish, that tells you where their attention is.
Insurance, references, and getting it on paper
The last three mistakes all come down to paperwork, and they’re the easiest to fix before you’ve committed to anyone:
- Insurance — ask for proof of public liability cover. A concrete truck working near your boundary, your neighbour’s path, or a stormwater line is a real risk, and you don’t want to be the one holding the bill if something gets cracked.
- References — anyone can post nice photos. Ask for two or three recent jobs in your area and go look at them. Concrete tells the truth after a year or two: hairline cracks, staining, joints that have opened up. Consumer NZ has decent guidance on vetting tradespeople and getting quotes before you sign, and ten minutes of homework there saves a lot of grief later.
- Written contract — get the price (including GST at 15%), the thickness, the reinforcing, the finish, the drainage falls, and the payment stages down on paper. A deposit to cover materials is normal. The balance is due once the job’s done and you’ve had a proper look at it. Anyone asking for full payment up front is a red flag.
Get these right and you’ll end up with a slab that outlasts the house. Get them wrong and you’ll be reading an article like this again in three years, wondering where it went sideways.

What homeowners actually ask me before booking a pour
How much does a concrete driveway cost in Auckland? For a standard exposed or broom-finish driveway, expect roughly $130–$180 per m² including GST, depending on access, groundworks and finish. Exposed aggregate and coloured finishes push it toward $200–$250 per m². Tricky access or a lot of excavation adds to that.
Can a cracked driveway be repaired, or does it need replacing? Hairline cracks and small edge chips can often be cut, filled and resealed. But if cracks are running through the full thickness of the slab, or the slab is rocking under load, that’s ground movement talking — patching just hides it for a season. At that point you’re better off pulling the old slab and re-pouring on properly compacted hardfill.
What should a concrete quote include? A proper quote lists the area in square metres, the slab thickness, the reinforcing (mesh or fibre), the basecourse prep, the finish, the falls for drainage, and a payment schedule with GST shown. If any of that is missing, ask for it in writing before you agree.
How many quotes should I get? Three is the number I’d aim for. One quote gives you nothing to compare against, and by five you’re mostly comparing sales patter rather than substance. Three lets you spot the outlier — the one that’s suspiciously cheap because something’s been left out, or the one that’s high because it’s pricing extra groundwork the others quietly skipped. Compare them line by line on thickness, base and drainage, not just the total at the bottom.
Do I need council consent for a concrete driveway? A straightforward driveway on flat ground usually doesn’t need building consent, but you may need approval for a new vehicle crossing onto the road, and resource consent can apply near protected trees or on steep sites. Check with Auckland Council before you start.
Choosing a concrete contractor really comes down to the same handful of checks every time: a fair quote with the base and thickness spelled out, proof of insurance, a couple of jobs you can go and look at, and everything down on paper before a deposit changes hands. Get those right and the driveway looks after itself for decades.
